Centuries ago, herbal wisdom was once the driving force of ground-breaking medical practice to help boost the body’s natural defenses. People had a more intimate relationship with the earth and did not take its healing powers for granted. Instead, they planted flourishing gardens and reaped the culinary, medicinal, aromatic and aesthetic benefits of herbs, vegetables, grains and flowers. Even Hippocrates touted: “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food" –-- which made sense in a culture without the luxury of sterilized operating rooms, high-tech machinery and synthetic pharmaceuticals.

Today, the practice has become suspect and deemed unreliable by modern practitioners. Whether you want to spice up your life, boost your immune system or alleviate symptoms of common ailments, a pinch of the right herb may be just what the doctor didn’t order.  However, more and more complementary medicine folks are suggesting herbs as viable, natural options to help: boost the immune system, balance hormones, maintain healthy weight, improve mental health and stimulate brain function.
